This fun, lettering exercise was created as accompaniment to a large set of caricature studies of legendary American actor James Dean (1932-1955), which can be viewed here.

The lettering style was inspired by the graphic work of another American legend – artist Ben Shahn (1898-1969) – whose rough hewn, hand drawn lettering approach is a far too under-utilized, not to mention beautiful, approach to creating various font titling styles.
